Washington Eagle Forum Initiative Recommendations
Initiative Measure 985—YES
This measure would open high-occupancy lanes to all traffic during specified hours, require traffic light synchronization, increase roadside assistance funding, and dedicate certain taxes, fines, tolls and other revenues to traffic-flow purposes.
- This Initiative forces Olympia to implement the performance audit recommendations by Auditor Brian Sonntag, a potential result of $3.2 billion in savings to taxpayers.
Initiative Measure 1000—NO!
This measure concerns allowing certain terminally ill competent adults to obtain lethal prescriptions.
- Initiative 1000 would legalize assisted suicide, permitting a doctor to give a lethal overdose to a patient if the doctor feels that the patient is likely to die within six months.
- There are no real safeguards in this initiative to protect the vulnerable.
- Patients currently have end-of-life choices, including durable power of attorney and living wills.
- Patients at the end of life deserve personal care and real compassion, not assisted suicide.
Initiative Measure 1029—NO
This measure would require long term-care workers to be certified as home care aides based on an examination, with exceptions; increase training and criminal background check requirements; establish disciplinary standards and procedures.
- This initiative will limit pool of qualified caregivers.
- State Patrol background checks are already required for paid caregivers.
- All caregivers, even family will be required to take unnecessary training.
