Washington Eagle Forum Testifies in Olympia

Washington Eagle Forum Board members Cindy Honcoop, Luanne VanWerven and Anne Culbertson testified in Olympia, WA, Thursday January 29th against SB5204 which “adopts the interstate agreement for the election of the President of the United States by national popular vote”.

“The Electoral College has served our country for over 200 years.” According to Bob Williams, president of Evergreen Freedom Foundation, “there is no need to get rid of it because of a few cases where the Electoral College did not elect the winner of the popular vote.” Prior to the hearing on the “Hill”, Washington Eagle Forum board members attended the Evergreen Freedom Foundation briefing on the Electoral College.

Cindy, Luanne and Anne gave historical, factual and reasoned statements with a request that the bill not pass. Evergreen Freedom Foundation also presented their “concerns” about SB5204 Electoral College before the Senate Panel.

“National Popular Vote” is the organization behind this piece of legislation. They have been successful in 4 other states and have legislation pending in at least 12 other states. This bill essentially eliminates the Electoral College system for electing the President and Vice President of the United States.

If this bill is passed, Washington State would be bound in a compact which would force Electoral College votes to the winner of the popular vote. The process to eliminate the Electoral College requires an amendment to the US Constitution. The compact would provide the end around until the Electoral College could be dissolved.
